Research Interests: Superconducting Quantum Computing

Born in 1968, he graduated from the Department of Physics, Nanjing University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree. In 1997, he pursued his doctoral degree at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Kansas, USA, focusing on superconducting qubits, and obtained his PhD in 2002. From 2002 to 2005, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE), Massachusetts Institute of Technology, continuing his research on superconducting qubits. In 2005, he returned to China and joined the Department of Physics, Nanjing University as a Yangtze River Distinguished Professor under the Chang Jiang Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education and a doctoral supervisor. He was awarded the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2007. His primary research areas cover superconducting quantum computing and superconducting devices, and he is among the world’s pioneering researchers conducting experimental studies on superconducting qubits. In 2002, he made the first experimental observation of quantum coherent oscillations in superconducting phase qubits. In 2010, he took the lead in demonstrating coherent manipulation of three solid-state qubits. His research group has observed a series of macroscopic quantum phenomena in superconducting qubits, including Mach-Zehnder interference of macroscopic quantum systems, Landau-Zener interference of quantum geometric phases, and quantum jumps. The team also realized the simulation of topological band structures using qubits. He has published over 100 SCI papers, including 3 in Science, 1 in Nature Communications and 9 in Physical Review Letters. He has presided over numerous research projects such as National Key R&D Programs, Major Research Plans, Key Projects and Integrated Projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
